Reality of Life

Sometimes I wonder how much of reality shows, such as Flavor of Love, are really real. The situations and actions that take place in front of the camera seem to be too astonishing to be considered completely and one hundred percent true. The naming of the girls, the drinking, the fighting, and of course the love making seem set up and irregular. It is hard for me to believe that one girl could be as stupid, as slutty, and as annoying as the girls that you can find on these reality television shows. I have never been surrounded by girls anywhere near the types that you find on reality shows. Let’s just say that these people who are, specially chosen, to take place in reality shows are nowhere near normal.

At times I will find that I turn to VH1 or MTV to watch a couple of minutes of one of these shows. Now they are not exactly the next History channels, but they are at least funny. Many people find fake life funny. That is how I know that it is fake; life is just not that funny or that entertaining. The thing about reality shows is that they are far from actual reality. Many of the events that take place on the shows would never happen to normal people in real life. Maybe we enjoy reality shows more than other shows because of this. Life tends to get boring and these reality shows make certain aspects seem interesting.

I question the extent to which these shows will go in order to continue entertaining their viewers. These are the shows that influence negative attitudes and turn our sweet little American girls into the next porn stars. In the future, hopefully, reality television shows will tone down a little bit.

Still Musical Television?

As a young girl, I remember watching music video after video on MTV. The popular television station attracted all age groups of people who would tune in to watch the top twenty videos of the week. There were also those few, celebrity updates, to which we all frowned in disappointment of the stupid things they were doing. The problem with MTV today is that they are no where near the same. No longer do they spend hours displaying the popular music videos of the day. They almost never show videos. Well I guess that you could look at TRL and say, “Well they did show 50 seconds of the number one video, today.”

To me, the station has only turned towards the dark side. Even though I will consistently find myself taking peeks at the new reality shows or watching the celebrity gossip, no one says that I actually enjoy it. Of course watching drunk ladies fight about some man whose age they are not even aware of can be quite funny, but there are just times where it gets to be too much. After watching the same episodes over and over again, the shows get old and you are quick to realize that they are simply dumb. Just to think, all of this wasted time spent showing the same Real World arguments could be spent showing hundreds of different music videos. Personally I find that this would be much more interesting. MTV has a lot to do in order to catch my attention again. I am not going to dis on the station by saying that it is bad altogether, but I think that many people would agree that MTV has turned into quite the boring media network.

Research Topics

Right now i am considering a few different ideas to which I can use as the topic of my research paper for class.

1) First I was thinking of doing my research essay on the weight problems that teenagers and adults go through today. I would focus on the side of people who constantly think of themselves as overweight when they are not. This is a huge problem among high school women across the world and i think that it would be interesting to cover thier story. There are so many personal stories out there that should be told and i would be able to do that by informing people of the obstacles and overcomings that these people have to go through.

2) A second idea for my project is researching sleep deprivation. There are people in the world who say that you loose a couple of years to your life if you go to bed upset. Personally, i go to bed upset a lot and i am quite curious if this is true or not. There would be a lot of information on the body and how it relates to your emotions. I could provide information to why this happens and use specific cases to back up the information. I think that this would be interesting for not only myself, but other readers, too.

3) Another issue that I would like to learn more about is the increase in teenage sex rates. More specifically i would like to talk about date rape. It is a topic that commonly is avoided by most people until it happens to themseleves or someone that they know. I dont know that much about date rape, but i could learn more about it and then inform other teenagers about the dangers that come with it.

4) A fourth idea that i am considering is researching mental illnesses. Mental illnesses are the most common illnesses in the United States but they are still the least known about. There are many different types of illnesses that could be addressed in my essay. I would like to learn more information to the illnesses and the results that they can cause. This would be able to attract a large audience of people with the purpose of simply informing them of the serious nature of mental illnesses.

Stylish Vs. Sleazy

Growing up in the United States today brings a whole new perspective to your eyes than it did fifty years ago. The teenagers, girls of the future America, are constantly surrounded by the ever changing news of Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan. The attitudes that these women portray are nothing but bad news for the people watching them on television. It seems like girls are never able to stay caught up on the rapidly changing styles of clothing that surround them in the schools, and across the world. It only hurts their decisions when they sit at home and watch the ‘Hollywood Fashion Stars’, debuting the new styles to hit the streets.

Some shirts are not even shirts at all. They are cloths, stitched together, and pasted onto the skinny bodies of the American actresses. These don’t come across as cute outfits to all people, but as outfits that would appear in the new issue of Hustler. Only some men enjoy watching the bellies of young girls giggle as they walk to class. New skirts and dresses show off more than a new born baby coming into the world. The breasts of our young ladies seem to be exposed repeatedly by red carpet actresses and stars. The photographers of large magazines and websites are on site, ready to capture the style updates, and eager to show them to the world. It is thanks to these photographers that we have 15 year old girls wearing revealing tanks and super-short skirts.

Our popular culture today accepts responsibility for all of the increasing influences coming from the Hollywood scenes. No longer is there a positive message coming from different stars. All of the messages, attitudes, and clothing styles provide discreet images to the teenagers of the day. For me it is hard to dress in a stylish way that is still not to the point of being sleazy. However, it is even harder to ignore the stories that we hear on television and the news. We may never be able to back down from the reputations that our generation has come to attribute to. Growing up, following the stars for so long may eventually hurt us even more in the future. The young Americans of the coming years will continue to be exposed to the sexy outfits of our role models. The sad news to dread is that the styles only continue to get worse and the teenagers only get more revealing as time goes on.
